DERAMORE SINGLE-STOREY EXTENSION
This project showcases our ability to design calm, light-filled extensions that enhance existing homes through careful proportion and considered detailing. It demonstrates how strategic use of skylights and large openings can transform the quality and atmosphere of everyday spaces.
BRIEF US ON YOUR PROJECT
Bringing Daylight into a Rear Extension
This single-storey extension focuses on improving natural light and spatial quality within the existing home. Designed to support everyday living, the new addition introduces a calm, open interior anchored by a large skylight that brings daylight deep into the plan throughout the day.
The extension is carefully proportioned to sit comfortably alongside the original building, with materials selected to match the existing property and reinforce a sense of continuity. Glazed patio doors provide controlled views and daylight while maintaining privacy and enclosure. The project demonstrates a considered, contextual approach to small-scale residential design, where light, simplicity, and restraint are central to the architectural response.
Our Process
The design process began with a client ambition to feel more connected to the garden, which is used extensively throughout the year. Rather than maximising floor area, our focus was on improving light, views, and the overall quality of the internal space.
We studied how daylight moved through the house at different times of day and used this to inform the placement of the extension and the introduction of a large rooflight to draw natural light deep into the plan.
The form and material palette were developed to sit comfortably alongside the existing property, ensuring the extension felt like a natural continuation of the home. Careful attention was given to proportion, glazing size, and internal layout to create a calm, flexible space that allows the client to feel more immersed in the garden without compromising comfort or privacy.
